India, officially known as "Republic of India", is located in South Asia, bordered by Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal and Bhutan to the north-east and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the East. It gained their independence from the United Kingdom in 1947 through widespread nonviolent resistance.
Recognized as the world's most populous democracy, India's population is second only to China. It is the seventh largest country by geographical area and is considered one of the poor countries in the world. Its top five cities in terms of population are Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata and Chennai.
Recent economic reforms to attract foreign investors has transformed India to become the second fastest growing large economy today. It is actually the worlds's twelfth largest economy at market exchange rates and ranks fourth in purchasing power.
India is a land of inherent spirituality. Four of the major world religions; Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism originated here. This is further reinforced by tourists who see India as the path to universal truth and to individual sanctification.
India is identified in history as one of the cradles of civilization, a region of historic trade routes and great empires. It boasts of a pluralistic, multilingual and multiethnic culture and society. It also enjoy a diversity of wildlife in a variety of protected areas. Thus, India, with its language, location, weather conditions and abundant natural resources,is hard to compare with any other nation.
